JURY DUTY

Ok, so here's the diehl/deal..... hahaha.......anyway.....

About a month ago, I get a notice in the mail that I have been selected for jury duty. If anyone has ever received one of these before, you know the drill..... the weekend before you are supposed to report, you have to call the courthouse and see if your number was chosen. This was the second time I have been selected. Last time, I didn't have to report. Out of about a thousand numbers, they choose a hundred. Well, this time, my number was chosen. I show up at the court house on Monday morning (yesterday) at 8:00 a.m. I watch a cheesey movie about how wonderful jury duty can be....blah, blah, blah.

After about an hour and a half of waiting, we are all called into a room with a judge, the defendants, and the plaintiffs and their attorneys. The attorneys go through the whole interview process with us jurors with questions about the particular case they have. It is boring as hell. Anywhoo............... we are sent back out in the hallway while the attorneys decide who they want. All of us are brought back into the courtroom when the judge announces the jurors who were chosen by the attorneys.

Well, hell, they call my name: Ka-ron Bun-Gum Ric-kels (they don't have my new name yet and they mutilate the old one.). Lo and behold, I am a juror. I am thinking the judge is going to say that they will call us when a case comes up............OHHHH, NOOOOO........ the trial starts after lunch, at 1:30 (it is now 11:45). Be back then. Alrighty then. I am officially JUROR # 8!!! I feel so special!

That's all I can say right now.......... it has been two days so far and is expected to go until Friday. After we, the jury, reach a verdict, I can tell you all about it, but for now, I cannot say a word. Just suffice it to say that it is waayyyyy interesting and if you ever have a chance to be on a jury....... don't try to excuse yourself. It is a very important civic duty and very fun.

Anyone else ever been on a jury? If so, tell me about your experience..... I am having a ball and learning a lot.

JOEL, TODD, CURT, and all you other legal geeks... "admonish me!" that's a legal term I learned. hee hee hee!!! ...... this is fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Hi Carron,
I have been serving on the Grand Jury in Federal Court for the last 13 months. In Michigan for the Grand Jury you have to commit for 18 months, I don't know if it is the same for Iowa. We meet the last week of each month. It has been pretty interesting. I was all against serving for 18 months, but it has been pretty fun. It is also interesting when you hear about a case on the news after it has been indicted. You can't forget about the $40.00 a day income plus mileage that you get for doing it,I guess that makes it all worth it.(ha ha)

  2. We only get $30.00 per day here unless it goes past 7 days, and then they up it to $50.00 per day (plus mileage, of course.)

In only three days, I have met so many nice people and we have all exchanged phone numbers and plan to stay in touch. What a wonderful way to make such good, new friends. We are having a ball!!!

I know where I stand on the verdict, but we'll see how the rest of them feel tomorrow!!

  3. Oh my heck, your experience sounds so much like my one & only jury experience - except i only got $10 a day plus mileage, which i lived less than a mile from the courthouse, so that didn't really mean much!

my trial was a civil not criminal case. truck v. city bus & one of the passengers of the bus was suing the truck driver & the city for a reoccurance of an old injury due to the collision. the case itself was very interesting - the judge & one of the lawyers did not get along, and when the lawyer's cell phone went off after lunch one day, i thought the judge was gonna come off the bench & bean him! so that was fun. ;)

i didn't make any lasting friendships, and i didn't get paid for jury duty where i worked at the time so the week long trial was a bit much for my pocketbook! but it was an experience & turned out to be good times.

enjoy & i hope you get the verdict you think is correct!
