This picture was taken exactly one year ago today, on Al's birthday, at the class gathering at Tucker's!

WHAT A WEIRD NIGHT

It started as a trip to Target for Father's Day cards. Just after we pulled into the parking lot, some maniac doing 70 m.p.h. down Edgewood Road plowed into two cars right in front of us before ditching his van into an embankment off of Highway 30. After talking to witnesses, cops, and stopping at IHOP for dinner, we decide to hunt down the elusive Kathy and Rick, who we had not seen in forever!!! Oddly enough, trying to find their house, we ended up on Darcie's street and called her from her driveway. Apparently, Darcie was getting her hair pulled, so we drove around until we got our bearings straight and found the Kirk residence. After a wonderful, two-hour, unannounced visit, we decided to head home. Passing Kernals' Stadium, which is right up the street from Rick and Kathy's house, a stray firework from the game finale, shot across the road right in front of us and into a parked car. Having dodged death twice in one night, we decided to go drink and thank God we were alive!!!

I'm finally back in cyberspace...ha! So VERY challenged I am with these machines. Had to catch up on the blog. Sorry no pics from us...I told you I was challenged...still not updated enough to do pics in cyberspace :-) Great to see all of the ones on the blog-what a riot!

Rick and I are constantly on the run...what's new? I don't know how you guys do it with kids?! Being the organized bastard that you are, there really shouldn't be any question LOL;-)

Our email will change eventually too. Mcleodusa is now ImOn so I will let you know.

Hey, classmates!!

I just received a phone call from Jeff Guilford. He wants me to wish you all a Happy New Year. He got a new cell phone for Christmas and was trying it out. We had such a nice long chat. I am picking him up next Sunday and we are going out for lunch!!!!

Scott, Jeff wants me to tell you that he really likes his job at the Monticello Post Office and that he loves to bowl. He also said to tell you not to get hurt in the war.

What a sweet, sweet man! Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :-)

We are so proud of all of you!

Today I was in Anamosa for the 12th annual Veterans Day program at the High School.
They honor vets who have served the military and the years of service at the school.
Tim Hollett heads the program and the student council are involved in the presentation.
It is such a wonderful event. I wish more people would attend.

The thing is that I didn't even know they did this until we got a letter stating that my
Dad was going to be honored and that we would receive his certificate. Some other
Vets, and I'm sorry I won't remember all of them, were a Hartwig man, Dr. Poulter,
Mr. Hugh Shaw, Mr. Biere, Curt Duwe and my Dad. There were 10 I think.
It was soooo emotional.

There were other speakers and one who presented Mike Duetmeyer with a really
neat print. Mike apparently donated two huge stones to this company and for the
life of me I can't remember why these guys needed the stones--God it had
everyone in tears--so here I am tripping up on the huge sad story he's telling
and I know he's talking about how Mike so generously donated these stones
and I completely missed the meaning.

So Mike is called to the stage and he's accepting this really nice print and he
had a hard time fighting through the thank yous. Really cool! Really cool!
It was great and made you just feel so proud of our men and women fighting
for our freedom.

Jeez it gives me goose bumps just writing this to you. They also had military
people stand who were in the audience and we'd applaud on our feet. It definately
brings attention and a HUGE reminder that these are REAL people and the
war is so REAL and how brave they truly are. The band played and the choir sang.
My niece Jen presented the certificates (what a big girl--aw) and my nephew
Jared handed them to the honoree. I just wish Dad was here to accept his
own award. Jon, Jeff and I thought we would have our Uncle (Dads brother)
who also is a vet and also a retired P.E. teacher/coach from Waukon
accept the award. More tears!!! It was great!!!

As you can tell I'm just so proud and I thought it might be nice for you to
post this on our blog not only, but including, the presentation for Mike,
but for our classmates who are vets and our classmates still in active duty.
I know there are several from the class of 1981. Know that we are so
proud of you and give BIG thanks to ALL you do for we the people!!!

Just read the blog tonite. Hearing what the Doctors have said, I'm sure you are firstly--shocked--of that whole thing. Secondly--not quite sure what to think. Having been through all of this with my mother-in-law, who survived 15 1/2 years post surgery, I can tell you it is not going to be an easy trip for any of you especially your Dad. Something I feel is in your Dad's favor is that he is NOT a "poor me" kind of guy. I also feel that your family will be his pillars of strength and faith. The Lord is with you, your family and your Dad, Carron and, hard as it may be, he will take his surgery if needed and treatments of whateversort and ~HE~ will be there through it all. We ALL will be there.

What I can hope for your family is that you pull together. That won't be a problem!! There are wonderful Doctors and facilities around here. I know they will do what is best for your Dad. Some of it...his recovery...will depend on lots of love and also some tough love as well. We all know he is a fighter and won't let it get him down. Pete's got a lot of time left on this Mother Earth and I know he'll be a great patient and do what they tell him.

I know it's a worrisome time my friend but please stay strong and know that we have very LARGE shoulders which we will lend anytime. I love you, Carron, and I will be praying for you and your family.

It's amazing how many people are enjoying the site, and they weren't even in our class. Like Doug Wortman. I grew up near him and haven't heard anything about him or his family for a long time.
